Family member of someone with a lived experience of addiction
My mum suffered with an alcohol problem and had severe mental health issues.
I was an angry young woman who had to put up with her behaviour and was controlled by her.
It was a difficult and challenging relationship for both of us.
As I entered recovery as a family member, I learnt to see it very differently and I am so glad I did. Now my son has struggled with drug addiction for 20 years. My relationship with him is so different because of my recovery and my changed attitudes.
My life is so much better today because of what I have learnt, and I feel I can be a positive influence on my son's life. It is such a blessing to stand beside him and support a loved one, and love the person they are without being controlled by their behaviour and addiction. I will always encourage my son’s recovery.
