Has a lived experience of addiction
My sister Sandra died one month before her 40th birthday. She had struggled with addiction since she was 16 years old and eventually died due to this.
We came from a very low socio-economic background with addiction and mental health issues strangling our family. Two comments by two different people stick out the most for me from when I was with her in ICU before I turned off her life support: "Why are you crying?" and "Are you sad?".
I think that says it all about addiction - the wider society is cold and unknowing, those of us in the midst of it, are traumatised.
